OVERVIEW
Description of Group/Organization and programs offered which relate to improving literacy:Tutoring/Mentoring - Communities In Schools offers a full time Coordinator of Volunteers who assists with the recruitment, screening and training of volunteer tutors and mentors. Then the CIS Student Support Specialist at each school provides the volunteers with consistent support and recognition.
Reading Soulmates – The Communities In Schools Reading Soulmates Program is a reading intervention for 1st grade students and a service learning strategy for 5th grade students, who will pair up with their younger "Soulmates" to assist them in mastering the recognition of 133 high frequency words that are critical to reading fluency.

We provide services in 22 public schools in Charleston County.
